Al Amazighi (“The Amazigh”, referring to the native people of North Africa) is a modern adaptation of the traditional wool garments worn by the native tribes of North Africa. The hooded cloak that inspired it belonged to a Moroccan shepherd (1875-1925) and was on display in Marseille, FR at the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations’ North Africa exhibit in August 2024. This piece takes inspiration not only from the silhouette, but the materials as well.
The indigo blue color was inspired by the traditional wear of the Tuareg (a native Amazigh tribe). Known as “The Blue People of the Sahara”, this indigenous group got their name from the color of their traditional garments. The deep indigo dye from their traditional robes and head veils (tagelmust) would rub off onto their skin from sweat and sun exposure, giving them a permanent blue-grey tint.
